Medical Abortion

Medical abortion with the combination of mifepristone and misoprostol is offered at ESC up to 9 weeks.

Our medical abortion package includes a consultation with Dr Seletz, ultrasound, lab work, the abortion pills and medication for pain and for nausea which we dispense at the first visit. The pain medication is a prescription strength pain killer, not just Tylenol and ibuprofen. The package includes follow-up ultrasound exams starting as early as a day later and continuing until we are sure you are no longer pregnant. It also includes a procedural abortion if the medical abortion fails.

Medication abortion has been available in the United States since 2000 and was initially approved for pregnancies just up to 7 weeks. The success rate is 98% for pregnancies under 7 weeks but decreases to 90% after 10 weeks. The need for a procedure for bleeding, incomplete abortion, and failed abortion increases in frequency as the pregnancy advances. The amount of bleeding and the severity of the cramping also increases with each additional week. This is why we stop offering the pill method after 9 weeks.

The medical abortion is available in-person until 11 weeks at PP, FPA, and at some private abortion practices as well. We strongly discourage mail-order abortion for all of the above reasons. However, if you have already taken pills that you received in the mail and you are now experiencing a complication, we can see you to figure out what is wrong. Many patients contact us for care after an abortion when they suspect they are having a complication.

Are you undecided about which type of abortion is right for you? Call and schedule a consultation to learn more about the pros and cons of the medication versus the procedural abortion.

FAQ

Yes. Abortions performed by a health care professional in a medical setting are safe with extremely low risk of complications. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), abortions are one of the safest medical procedures to be done when performed by a trained professional.
  • A surgical abortion is performed by a trained medical professional in a healthcare center, consisting of a minor surgical procedure that takes around 5-15 minutes, not including prep and recovery time. The common techniques include dilation and evacuation (D&E) and vacuum aspiration. It may require anesthesia or sedation and it is invasive, however there is less total bleeding and you are surrounded by medical professionals in our Beverly Hills clinic for a quick and highly effective procedure.
  • A medical abortion, or the “abortion pill” is a non-invasive method that includes taking medication to end a pregnancy. This method does come with some extensive bleeding and cramping, and some patients may notice it takes multiple days to complete.
No, your future fertility will not be affected. It is incredibly rare that someone who has an abortion experiences fertility issues in the future. In the same vein, having multiple abortions in your lifetime generally is not dangerous to your health or your fertility.
Your preparation depends on what kind of abortion you’ll be having (medical or surgical). In general, plan on arranging a ride home if you’ll be receiving sedation for a surgical procedure, and making sure you take time off to rest in the days following. Make sure you have an ample amount of pads, comfortable clothing, and whatever pain relief Eve Surgical recommends. The team at Eve Surgical will be available to administer any medications as needed. Lastly, inform your doctor ahead of time if you have any questions or special health needs.
No, we do not take insurance. The cost of an abortion at our clinic varies based on method and how far along the pregnancy is, and is collected at the time of the appointment. We offer same day appointments, no Kaiser or other insurances needed. Our fees are reasonable compared to most independent providers, and in many cases lower than large clinic chains. The cost includes your consultation, in-office ultrasounds, anesthesia, any follow-up visits necessary, and medications administered on-site. Lab work that must be sent out is not included, but will be discussed with you in advance.
Yes, abortion is legal in Los Angeles and all of California. For a more in depth answer, please visit our blog.
In California, abortion is legal up until the point of fetal viability– when a doctor determines the fetus can survive outside of the uterus (usually around 24-26 weeks, though it varies from person to person). After the point of viability, pregnancy termination may only be performed if continuing the pregnancy would endanger the life or health of the mother. During your consultation, your doctor will determine if abortion is an option for you based on gestation.
We understand that nobody wants to wait days nor weeks to get this taken care of. We have same-day and next-day appointments available in Beverly Hills and some appointments available on weekends and evenings. Most of our patients are in and out of the facility within a 2 hour window.
Yes, you are able to travel to our clinic in Beverly Hills even if you do not live in California. We have cared for many patients who have traveled from out of state, whether due to their home state’s laws, or fetal abnormalities past 24 weeks. Since our office is centrally located in Los Angeles, you would be able to find many direct flights into LAX and find us only 10 miles away. We offer morning, evening, and some weekend appointments, sometimes at short notice, however we do recommend booking your appointment with Eve Surgical Center before you make your travel arrangements.
