Medical Abortion

Medical abortion with the combination of mifepristone and misoprostol is offered at ESC up to 9 weeks.
Our medical abortion package includes a consultation with Dr Seletz, ultrasound, lab work, the abortion pills and medication for pain and for nausea which we dispense at the first visit. The pain medication is a prescription strength pain killer, not just Tylenol and ibuprofen. The package includes follow-up ultrasound exams starting as early as a day later and continuing until we are sure you are no longer pregnant. It also includes a procedural abortion if the medical abortion fails.
Medication abortion has been available in the United States since 2000 and was initially approved for pregnancies just up to 7 weeks. The success rate is 98% for pregnancies under 7 weeks but decreases to 90% after 10 weeks. The need for a procedure for bleeding, incomplete abortion, and failed abortion increases in frequency as the pregnancy advances. The amount of bleeding and the severity of the cramping also increases with each additional week. This is why we stop offering the pill method after 9 weeks.
The medical abortion is available in-person until 11 weeks at PP, FPA, and at some private abortion practices as well. We strongly discourage mail-order abortion for all of the above reasons. However, if you have already taken pills that you received in the mail and you are now experiencing a complication, we can see you to figure out what is wrong. Many patients contact us for care after an abortion when they suspect they are having a complication.
Are you undecided about which type of abortion is right for you? Call and schedule a consultation to learn more about the pros and cons of the medication versus the procedural abortion.
