About

Dr Josepha Seletz
Dr Josepha Seletz is the owner and provider at Eve Surgical Center. She was born and raised in Los Angeles and received her undergraduate degree at UCLA. She attended medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia PA, did an internship at San Francisco General Hospital, and residency at Kaiser in Los Angeles. After residency she joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
In 1990 there were fellowships in Ob/Gyn for physicians who wanted to specialize in maternal-fetal medicine, cancer, infertility, and urology but there was no such thing as a fellowship for abortions. She learned how to perform the D&E and the intact D&X with hands on experience directly from Dr McMahon and Dr Dotson. Dr McMahon invited her to become a member of the National Abortion Federation in 1991 where she met other pioneers in the field of late term abortions — Dr Hern, Dr Tiller, Dr Stubblefield to name a few. In 1992 she opened her own free standing abortion practice in Beverly Hills – the Pro-Choice Medical Center.
Dr Seletz was recruited by Dr Dotson in 2001 to take over as the provider at Eve Surgical Center. By the time the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology began the process of certification in Complex Family Planning for the newly formed fellowship Dr Seletz was working full time at Eve Surgical Center.
Dr Seletz remained the sole provider of the abortions at Eve until the Dotson family was forced to forfeit the building in west Los Angeles. Dr Seletz and the staff re-opened the practice under the name Sinai Surgical Center on La Cienega boulevard. The practice now has a new location in Beverly Hills and has re-opened again as Eve Surgical Center.
She specializes in abortions for fetal anomalies. Patients coming for abortions in the second trimester and later are frequently carrying a desired pregnancy that is complicated by serious structural or genetic anomalies. As a mother of three grown daughters and a grandmother to six Dr Seletz has empathy to understand what this is like. No amount of explaining can convey the depth of emotion of an experience like this better than a female provider who is also a parent herself.
Dr Seletz is a founding member of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Network and during the 1990’s she provided all of the abortions for that organization. From 2010 until 2021 Dr Seletz was also contracted with Kaiser and provided all of the high risk and advanced gestational age abortions for all of the Kaiser hospitals in southern California. She continues to perform late term abortions for many maternal-fetal-medicine specialists throughout Southern California and for patients who are referred from states where abortion is no longer available.
Now that there are graduates of the fellowship in complex family planning both in Kaiser and in the teaching hospitals Dr Seletz is able to offer these services directly to the public. The teaching hospitals now also train residents and medical students to perform abortions. If you would like to find out more about how a physician learns to do abortions check out our section Ryan teaching program in Fun Facts.
Dr Seletz is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the National Abortion Federation, and a member of the Society of Family Planning. She is a past member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. She has participated in post-graduate seminars in the fields of maternal-fetal-medicine, prenatal genetics, and advanced ultrasound.
